On March 30th, MALA partnered with AMENA Creative to host a day of cultural activities in celebration on the Persian Nowruz holiday. Nowruz is the celebration of the arrival of the Spring Equinox, and is regarded as the official beginning of the New Year in 3 countries: Iran, Afghanistan & Tajikistan. This unique cultural ritual celebration is also observed in nations such as Turkey, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

MALA invited Master Sommelier, Anahita Shams and Professor Touraj Daryaee of University of California Irvine to discuss their new BBC documentary on the history and origins of Shiraz wine. Following their presentation and a preview of the film, guests enjoyed a meal prepared from ancient Persian recipes, and accompanied by Shiraz wine pairings.

Nowruz has been celebrated all over the world for nearly 3,000 years; MALA is honored to continue this tradition, and to host a space for people learn from, and teach each other about cultural, heritage, and history. Stay tuned for more exciting MALA cultural programming this Summer!
