Digital Diasporas Series with

MALA has partnered with Facebook on the “Digital Diasporas” initiative, a series of virtual gatherings aimed at understanding the African diaspora user experience and amplifying diverse voices within the African, Arab, and Turkish diasporas. These online events help amplify and explore the diversity of the “digital diasporic experience.”

This is a series of private and public virtual gatherings aimed at understanding the African diaspora user experience on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and providing support to maximize their engagement on the platform. Whether it’s connecting with relatives all over the world, or promoting diaspora businesses and organizations, or amplifying diaspora voices and ideas, Facebook and MALA recognize the powerful social and economic impact diasporas are making through digital platforms.

Sponsored by Facebook, MALA’s events have featured Muslim Americans with roots in both East and West Africa, including grassroots Somali community leaders as well as Senegalese-American Ahmadou Seck – associate producer of the Netflix hit show “Cobra Kai” – for a discussion about being a Black Muslim creative in Hollywood.

To help expand the online conversation, Facebook’s “Ads for Impact” grant initiative has helped MALA engage thousands of new members and recruit participants for MALA’s oral history project “Muslim American Journeys.”
